•What does the drawing express? Justify your answer using information from your responses above.
From my points of view, this is a practical drawing which did not have a strong emotion to present. But it still have some atmosphere created and connect to audience, such as relax and silent. Because of the simple position and line presentation, this drawing is easily understand and feeling it. Audience can easily understand the posture of the sleeping. By different thickness and darkness, we can know where the light source is.
•In your opinion, why is this work interesting/moving/ clever/ imaginative/thought-provoking/......? Choose the adjective(s) that best fit(s) the work, and then justify your conclusions by referring to specific features and qualities of the drawing (including those you have discussed above).
I am interesting in those simple line. Artist can show the whole gesture clearly by simply line. It is such a simple drawing but it is complex in some aspects. There are only one main character without details. Artist did not show the facial appearance but only depict the body gesture. Audience can focus on the sleeping gesture and feel the silent atmosphere. It is harmonious because everything is claim and still. Furthermore, the brushstroke is soft and curvy. It also creates harmonious drawing.

Jacqueline :Line and tone are important because it gives form to the body. While the drawing is about a sleeping girl, the random lines and curve linest create a diagonal composition that give a sense of movement rather than rest.
ReplyDeleteStephen: You have made a good analysis on the drawing. I think the drawing is interesting and intelligent as it perfectly presents the complicated gesture of a sleeping girl with a few simple smooth lines only. As you have mentioned, the use of charcoal as medium and the partially darkened background create a sense of loneliness. I think one of the interesting points is that although the title of the drawing is sleeping girl, my first impression of the drawing is that the girl is actually bending over the bed and crying. I think the charcoal that brings down from her right eye is quite similar to tear. This additionally gives me a sense of desperation and helplessness instead of peace and silence when looking at the drawing.

ReplyDeleteI am also interesting on the simple line of this painting. I think its maybe a quick sketch that only had few lines. However, the lines depicted the object quite tight, compare with the heavy background, the brush skole on the right hand concern. Its provides us a feel of little girl sleeping deeply. So I agree that this is a harmonious painting.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the simple lines are used to outline that girl's body. The thick lines under the body like the Chinese calligraphy creates some shadow to make the girl vivid. And the environment and the atmosphere are quite comfortable by the soft curved lines
I think you are right. Rembrandt used simple lines to depict the gesture of the woman. And there are more details in the head than the body. And the darker background behind the head give us a feeling of 3 dimension as the head seems to be popping up and closer to us. That's what we've learned in the lesson of drawing balls and cubes:)
