Bobo Tsang- KrutInsideOut2004

A brief guide to analysing a drawing:
1) INTRODUCE THE DRAWING IN GENERAL TERMS
•What is the title of the drawing?

   side Out

•What is the name of the artist?

  Krutin

•What is the year the drawing was done?

  2004

•What is the medium? (ie the materials used to produce the picture, for example charcoal on paper, pen and ink etc)

   Water-color painting

•What is the subject matter or general theme of the work? (eg is it a figure drawing, a map, a portrait, an autobiographical work, a picture about nature, a drawing of the city etc?)

I think this is a figure painting but not so realistic. Like a cartoon character more or the artist himself.

•Does the drawing have a particular purpose? eg Is it a diagram that explains how something works? Does it record accurately record the appearance of something? Does it express the artist's emotion or memory?

I think that this painting have a particular meaning for the artist himself. This painting do not focus on the figure's facial expression. It's may a kind of reflection or thinking for the artist. The figure's belly was cut off and the intestines were shown. In my opinions, the artist may have something feeling to express to the people. The figure maybe the artist. So, I think the artist may want to show his kind of feeling or emotion, just like he want to show his secret to the others. And because of the simplified figure, we can have more imagination and fantasy on this painting.

2) DESCRIBE THE DRAWING IN DETAIL
•How is line used? What does it do/express?

The lines in here are rough and simple. This express the simple feeling for us. Moreover, we can see that this figure's intestines was shown by some curve lines, it makes this painting highly expressive and dynamic. Especially the belly and the hands.

The rough and the curve lines can create a kind of strong feeling for us. We can see the hands and the body of the figure had been simplified. So, the artist may may a strong emotion to express to the audience. Indeed, the artist may want to share his anger or surprise to us.

•How is tone used? What does it do/express?

There are no other color but only the brown in the painting. Have some comics style. And we can see that there are different gradation of brown. Maybe the artist want to focus more on the figure and the meaning. So, he use one of the simple colors to draw the figure.

•What can you say about shape and/or form in this picture? What is the effect?

Shape in here are only the figure's body outline. It's simplified.  As I mentioned above, the shape of the body, hands and intestines were shown a kind of dynamic and movement because of the curve lines and shape.

•What can you say about the composition of the drawing? What is the effect of this type of composition on the overall drawing?

The figure has occupied the whole painting here. This composition can catch people attention. We can focus more what the artist want to express. It match with the simple style of this painting.

•Is rhythm important in this picture? If so, say more about it...

I think rhythm of the lines in this painting is quite important here. It is because  the rhythm make the brush more smooth. The painting becomes more comfortable. Moreover, the rhythm is one of the important elements to make this painting to become more dynamic and lively.

•Is the picture balanced? Explain...

I think the painting is  not quite balance. It is because the body of the figure is curved, the intestines have some movement feeling. Also, the angle and the composition are more intensifies so that we can feel the dynamism.

•Is perspective used in the picture? If so, describe the way that the illusion of three-dimensional space has been created.

The perspective do not used in this picture.  There are no shading, illusion of 3D space here.

•Is the picture harmonious? If so, in what way?

The picture is quite harmonious. It is because the lines in here are so smooth and simple. There are not too much straight line or angle in the picture. Moreover, there are no contrast color and cold color in this painting.

•Are there any strong contrasts in the picture? Say more...

Obviously, this picture do not have strong contrast. It is because the painting only have brown in color. The lines of the painting is similar. So, the painting have no strong contrast.

3) INTERPRETATION AND EVALUATION
•What is the mood of the drawing? Justify your answer using information from your responses above.

The mood in this painting is comic and funny. It is because the lines are very smooth and simplified. It just like a cartoon figure. This is not realistic painting or have some serious/ sad topic of the painting.

•What does the drawing express? Justify your answer using information from your responses above.

I think the meaning in this painting is that we should stand out and express our feeling to the other. The painting have only one figure (simple figure), it means that we should focus more on the meaning on the figure's action but not the tone/ color/ shading etc. In my opinions, the artist may through this painting to give us a message that we should share our feeling to others.

•In your opinion, why is this work interesting/moving/ clever/ imaginative/thought-provoking/......?  Choose the adjective(s) that best fit(s) the work, and then justify your conclusions by referring to specific features and qualities of the drawing (including those you have discussed above).

As I mentioned above, this painting is attractive to me because of this painting unlike the other painting that just focus on the painting skill. It let me focus on the meaning of the painting.

  1. Chloe: Hi Bobo.
Your analysis is completed and thoughtful. As you mentioned in the part of using line, lines are expressing “the simple feeling of us”. I am very curious about this sentence. Or you can explain it more. As the painting depicts, there are two groups of lines, does the red color one is that simple feeling that you have mentioned? Does it mean to share our feeling to others? I am just wondering. But overall, you picked an interesting painting and did a well job.

  2. Jacqueline: Indeed, I agree the line is important in this drawing, but equally important I'd say is the rhythm because it makes the drawing highly expressive and dynamic, as you can observe the curves lines of the hands and the overall rhythm of the body. Moreover, the the angled composition further intensifies the dynamism of the drawing.

  3. Carol: Enjoyable to read, and a satisfactory analysis Bobo, but it would have benefitted from more detail and greater depth of analysis. It would have been good to see more comments on classmates' work as well.
