Hepworth produced a lot of doctors at work in operating theatres. It is because she had the friendship with the the doctor who treated her daughter in the hospitalisation

shows simple scene of a surgery and it depicts doctors doing surgery in the operation room. It express the artist’s feelings and shows a kind of harmony and warming.The artist's emotion on the doctor about taking care the patient. Herpworth showed a kind of thankful to the doctors and try to present the surgery in the painting.

The line are simple and clear.It describes the shape of the people and their movement clearly. Because there are simple lines, it express calm feeling. There are some contour lines are blurring and lines show the artist tried to capture the movement of the doctors.
The whole painting in a soft lines and you can see the hand's details. The artist use many soft line to depict the whole scene and it give the viewer a kind of comfortable feeling.
Also , there are almost curve lines in the painting and the lines look like sketch lines so the images are partly hidden and partly visible.The using of lines avoid the strong visual impact and create a mild images.
Especially the lines near the ear , it is hard to see the lines but there are many lines in white and yellow colour surrounded by the ear. It makes the viewers imagine about the hidden and visible lines.

The whole painting is full of round shapes image and it affects the feeling of the picture. There are less images in square shape so it is harmony and soft to appreciate.

The lamp and ear become the focus point of this painting. The doctor's position points to the lamp. It shows the lamp is bright and light up the operation. This kind of composition show the professional of the doctors that they are not nerve to do the operation.
Also, the painting shows the ear with light and that is the focus point. All the doctors are posing to the ear and all the movement and their eyes are focus on one point.

Yes, the doctor on the top is smaller than the others and it create a three dimensional space that the operation is in progress and the space can be expanded. The shadow on the back with purple colour also create space and make a sense of multi-level of the painting.

Yes. The triangular composition is balanced and create a full and complete sense of the painting . The stable scene make it feel harmonious. It express a kind of peaceful about the operation. In our mind, we always think the operation room is busy, emergency and dangerous. In this painting, it shows a different moment which is peaceful. On the doctors faces, there are no nervous and worries. The drawing show a moodmental stateframe of mind about the artist want to show her views on the operation and her mood about doing the operation. The real situation may not that peaceful but the artist try to project her mood into the real situation so she use a little bit fantasy ways to express her views.

This work is imaginative because you can not really see the whole operation and you can only see the unclear ear there. It creates a imaginative space for us to think. I will say this picture is peaceful and steady. The smooth lines and balanced composition create a peaceful ear operating moment and the warm colour make me feel comfortable and push away our bad feeling about the operations.

You did a good work on the analysis and doing research of the painter. Barbara Hepworth did other paintings about doctor in doing surgery too.
